Smaller, smarter, sustainable. Clever, comfortable, climate resilient. Light-footed and light-filled. Designed for its site, its climate and to meet the needs and lifestyle of its owners.
At just 145m2, this flexible and super-functional, four bedroom, two bathroom, family home demonstrates the power of combining climate-responsive architecture with building science.
With a focus on space-efficiency and thermal bang-for-buck, this home is 43% smaller than the average new Canberra home and uses 60% less energy than typical Canberra households.
Despite its relatively small floor area this home feels and functions like a generous and delightful family home. Using raw brick and metal cladding this house has a distinctly Australian feel. It sits very gently in its established streetscape and connects beautifully with its big backyard.
“Nailed the brief! From the very first concept we knew we were going to love our Light House home.
The central kitchen and living space brings the whole family together throughout the day. We love being able to cook, talk and play in the same light-filled space. The deck and backyard flow so naturally from there and with the big north facing windows we can see the whole yard if the kids are playing outside. They also give our dog Scout easy access for mournful looks if she is left outside too long.
The other spaces in the house are deliberately separated but function seamlessly. We have already had family and friends stay regularly and it is great to give them their own space in the 'guest wing' with their own bedroom and full-sized bathroom.
The fourth bedroom has become a home office sooner than we planned. It is a real treat to set up there for the day looking out into the garden.
There is just nothing that we would change ...”
