Don't reno without thermo
If you’re going to renovate or extend it’s also the time to do energy efficiency upgrades. A small investment at the design stage can deliver HUGE returns in terms of improving comfort and health, not to mention reduced energy bills.
Taking advantage of the orientation of your block as you rejig the layout, plus improving insulation, airtightness, ventilation, summer shading…and then glazing…are the keys. Why wouldn’t you?
Here’s an example. This well-oriented 4.8 star home outside Canberra - built in the 1980s - is getting a serious refresh, including massive improvements to its functionality and thermal performance…all within the existing footprint!
The resulting 7+ star home will require half as much energy for heating and cooling and be a delight to live in.
Even if your home is starting at 0, 1 or 2 stars, we promise you, it’s possible to massively improve your comfort and reduce your bills.
If you’re getting a fresh new look (new kitchen, bathroom and colour scheme) then make sure you don’t miss the chance to do the less visible, and less aesthetically pleasing, things like insulation and draught sealing. Its also a great time to go all electric.
Imagine having a home that looks AND feels great! The feeling great stuff is much cheaper upfront AND it reduces your running costs…to pay for your new kitchen and bathroom!
Please note though that houses are complex things and you should take a holistic approach (appropriate to your home and climate) when planning any upgrades. This article on condensation is a good place to start.
