Cohousing — a study by Michi Moses, architect at Light House

Light House architect Michi Moses (nee Playford), recipient of the 2023 Paul Pholeros Architecture Scholarship, has completed her final report. Titled ‘We're All in This Together’, the report explores the potential of cohousing to improve housing accessibility and living conditions in Australia by fostering community, sustainability, and affordability through shared resources, participatory decision-making, and environmentally conscious design. By examining case studies of existing cohousing communities across Australia, it highlights cohousing as an alternative housing model in response to challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, rising interest rates, and climate change. The report also examines the legal, financial, and governance structures that support successful cohousing developments, and offers recommendations for improving the affordability and ease of procurement for future developments.
