The growing micro-forest trend
The Climate Factory was founded by Edwina Robinson in 2019, after the hottest and driest summer on record in Australia. The Climate Factory’s vision is to plant a micro-forest in every urban hotspot in Australia.
Micro-forests are community initiated and community funded pilot revegetation projects in urban areas that cool the local landscape, create important habitat for native animals and provide hope for the future.
Now with the help of The Climate Factory, micro-forests are a growing trend in Canberra, and Light House is excited to be a grass-roots supporter! (The puns are coming thick and fast today.)
In 2020 we sponsored (and planted trees in) Canberra’s first urban community micro-forest in Downer that has truly transformed a previously unappealing barren park. At the link you’ll find a photo of Jenny really throwing her back into the project.
Last year we also pledged our support to the Watson Micro-Forest. They have raised nearly $53,000 to date, now have a draft plan and hope to commence work later this year.
And now in 2021 we are throwing our support and money (and perhaps even our backs) behind the Holt Micro-Forest. So far they have raised $25,000, but for as little as $30 you can make a donation to help them achieve their stretch goal of $35,000, needed to fund enhancements such as a nature play space, signage and seating and edibles.
There are also other micro-forests sprouting up across Canberra, such as the edible micro-forest in Braddon and the Sullivan’s Creek Micro-Forest in Lyneham that has just been planted.
The Climate Factory runs online workshops on how to create a community micro-forest. So don’t just sit there, pull your green finger out and start one in your local community today! You can also donate to The Climate Factory to support the community micro-forest initiative.
